After I retired, I vowed to travel more and go to relatively exotic places. Over the past few years, I've managed to take some good trips, which I've documented here (Antarctica, Galapagos, etc.), but due to COVID-19, most of my travels have been put on hold. We are currently ramping up our efforts again and would like to crowdsource some travel destinations. My current travel schedule is as follows, but two of the three trips are work-related.
May: Lectures and individual interviews/discussions in and around Amsterdam. (one week)
August: South Africa visits Cape Town and then Kruger to see animals (1 month)
October: Lecture at the CSICon conference in Las Vegas (4 days).
Two of these trips are work-related, but I only travel for work to nice places and interesting meetings. I would also be happy to visit Amsterdam and go to the CSICon conference, the Sketical Inquirer conference. However, this still leaves out the longer purely recreational trip I had planned. Therefore, we would like to ask our readers to suggest destinations.
What I'm looking for is:
- Traveling for a few weeks to a month
- Destinations I've never been to before (yes, I don't think anyone knows all the places I've seen, but I'm sure you know a few)
- A place that is quite exotic and not a classic tourist destination (i.e. Thailand compared to Italy). For example: Some places I considered include Southeast Asia, Yucatan, Argentina, and Australia (the last one seemed to me to require months of travel, and Oz is very I was attracted to it, but I avoided it). But it's a very small sample.
- A place where you can travel individually rather than in a group. (An exception is cruises to places such as the Antarctic and North Pole, which require more or less traveling in groups on board the ship.)
- Ideally there should be delicious (local) food
I travel much the same way I did when I was young and poor, so I don't need the luxury.
I'm not a spring chicken and would like to go to “harder” destinations while I'm still relatively healthy. I have always feared that when I was dying, my biggest regret would be not experiencing the diversity and glory of this diverse, beautiful, and fascinating planet.
If you have any suggestions, we would also appreciate any additional information (why you should go, what to see, etc.).
thank you!
