The Southeast Iowa Super Conference Shootout concludes tonight with the WACO boys taking on Holy Trinity Catholic on the KCII3 stream, followed by Winfield vs. Mt. Martin. Union takes on West Burlington.
With 14 wins and 4 losses, WACO is in second place in the Super Conference North. The Warriors have won five straight games, including this week's game against Lone Tree and Moravia. WACO outscored the Mohicans 70-64 in overtime, erasing an 11-point halftime deficit. Chase Waterhouse and Colton Leichty had double-doubles, totaling 35 points, and Reese Oswald added 15 points and nine boards. WACO averaged 63 points per game and allowed 43 points, shooting 44% from the floor, 24% from beyond the arc, and 60% from the line. They enter tonight's contest leading 1A in steals and are in the top 10 in rebounds.
Holy Trinity Catholic is also in second place in the South standings with a 14-4 record. The Crusaders advance to Saturday night on a six-game winning streak, with wins over Van Buren County, Mediapolis and Central Lee this week. HTC is scoring 62 points, giving up 44 points, shooting percentage 51, 3-point percentage 34, and free throw percentage 63 per game. The Crusaders are fifth in 1A with 348 assists, thanks in part to Adam Sobchak's 149 assists. That puts him ahead of his class. Meanwhile, Luke Herridge has the seventh-most points in 1A. Tonight's game will be a rematch from the season opener, where Holy Trinity defeated the Warriors 59-50. Prior to that, WACO had won three straight against the Crusaders.
Winfield-Mount Union's boys team leads the nightcap, leading the Super Conference North at 15-1 and ranked fourth in 1A. The Wolves defeated Columbus and Highland in their last two games by scores of 76-12 and 76-15, respectively. WMU has Abram Edwards averaging a double-double and Cam Buffington scoring his nearly 20 points per game. These two have been a huge driving force for the team's 64 points and 32 allowed goals on a nightly basis. The Timberwolves are top 10 in team assists and blocks, shooting 50 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 53 percent from the charity stripe. They have won 13 straight games since their only loss to Illinois' Illini Bluffs.
West Burlington is undefeated this season and has a chance to go 15-0 in the Super Conference South. The Falcons, ranked No. 10 in 2A, continued their perfect record with a 65-52 win over Danville on Tuesday. West Burlington averaged nearly 70 points a night, shooting just under 50 percent from the floor, 31 percent from deep and 58 percent from the line. The Falcons scored 47 points on the night and averaged 28 rebounds, 13 assists, nine steals, one block and nine turnovers. Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington were scheduled to play on Jan. 22, but the game was canceled due to weather. In just six games since 2014, West Burlington has won four games, 66-52, including the last meeting in January 2023.
