JACKSON, Tenn. – Finance students at the University of Tennessee at Martin had the opportunity to present their efforts to the Rotary Club Wednesday afternoon.
UT Martin was one of the first schools to benefit from the Tennessee Valley Authority Investments Challenge program.
“TVA is funding this show with money from their retirement trust. They fund the investments. That means every purchase we make comes from funds that TVA provides us. TVA also sends us to conferences twice a year where we interact with students, deepen our relationships with them, and introduce us to experts in the field.” UT Martin said Brittany Cole, assistant professor of finance at the school.
These conferences give you the opportunity to network and learn from real-life scenarios.
Some of these conferences are held within the state, while others are held across the country.
“We went there and had a few projects to work on. One was to work on a poster board detailing every decision and performance. The other was just creating a mock portfolio. And we were judged on that basis,” said Alex Bowker, a finance student at UT Martin.
Students learn about the technology used, future career paths, communication skills, and more.
Students can take this course as many times as they wish and will also have the opportunity to become a peer leader.
“So this year we have some students who are in their third semester of this course. They will have more responsibility in this course than they did when they first took it. and are responsible for writing reports and presentations. So they continue to build on their leadership skills from day one,” Cole said.
Cole said the opportunity to speak to the community is a great example of UT Martin's mission statement.
