Tesla has rolled out a significant update to its iPhone app, introducing support for Ultra Wideband (UWB) in version 2024.2.3. This enhancement, highlighted in the “Not a Tesla App,” results in a more robust and secure digital key experience compared to Bluetooth technology. UWB's precise tracking allows the car to determine the exact location of the key, minimizing the risk of a replace spoofing attack.
What is a replace spoofing attack?
Replay spoofing attacks involve cybercriminals intercepting secure network communications and fraudulently delaying or retransmitting the communications to the wrong recipient. Spoofing involves pretending to be someone else in order to gain trust or access, steal data, or spread malware.
Improved accuracy and security
Implementing UWB is more than just a security measure. This allows the car to identify which user is approaching the driver's side, and is especially useful in scenarios where multiple people with phone keys access the vehicle at the same time. This level of precise tracking is similar to the technology behind Apple AirTags, which ensures precise location even in difficult environments, The Verge reports.
Although currently exclusive to iPhones, this advancement suggests possible expansion to Android devices, especially considering recent models such as Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones that incorporate UWB chips.

Vehicle compatibility and future integration
Notably, only the latest Model 3 and 2023 Model X currently support this feature, and it will be integrated into new Model X, Model S, and Cybertruck variants in the future. Compatible models are iPhone 11 series and later iPhones, excluding SE models.
Additionally, Tesla's latest software update introduces Ultra Wideband support to enhance the functionality of the built-in phone key feature. This will allow Tesla owners to easily lock and unlock their vehicles using their iPhone, eliminating the need for a physical key.
UWB technology improves the accuracy of the phone key function, allowing timely recognition of your iPhone's proximity to your vehicle for seamless locking and unlocking. The release notes highlight the improved responsiveness of automatic doors with UWB.
