With the onslaught of humanoids introduced in 2023, Atlas, the humanoid that set the stage for much of today's humanoid advancements, seems to have fallen out of the spotlight. But not so soon, Boston Dynamics said today on its YouTube channel.
Boston Dynamics has released a video showing this in action. atlas humanoid Selection and placement of automotive struts. The key to this demo is that Atlas uses the robot's onboard sensors to perform all object recognition. Atlas uses a gripper to retrieve the automotive strut from the vertical storage unit and places it horizontally on Flow's cart.
As humanoid competition intensifies, humanoids from companies like Agility Robotics, Apptronik, and Figure are moving closer to real-world work. Agility's Digit has been tested by Amazon and GXO Logistics. And Figure recently signed a deal with BMW to explore what humanoids could do at the automaker's manufacturing facility in South Carolina. Many other humanoid robot companies are also releasing videos of their robots as they evolve and become more capable.
The team at Boston Dynamics is excited to demonstrate Atlas' capabilities in real-world applications, as communicated in the screenshot below by Boston Dynamics Chief Strategy Officer Mark Thiermann and Vice President of Marketing and Communications Nicholas Noel. Did.
Atlas Humanoid has already wowed the world with its ability to perform dynamic parkour feats. And we saw it in action on a mock construction site in 2023. However, Atlas is still a development platform due to its hydraulically actuated design, and the robot is not yet ready to start working in the real world. However, this demonstration shows that Atlas and other humanoids can perform difficult manipulation tasks, such as manipulating heavy objects, if properly equipped.
The fact that Boston Dynamics continues to invest in the development of Atlas will help raise the bar for humanoids, and hopefully suggests that Atlas will be commercialized in some form in the future.
