The incident occurred at 1:20 p.m. Sunday in the Home Depot parking lot at 1830 Slauson Avenue, said Officer Drake Madison, a Los Angeles Police Department public information officer.
Madison said the suspect, a man in his 40s, attempted to restrain the victim after the victim assaulted a third party.
“As the victim attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle, the suspect fired an unknown number of rounds, striking the victim,” Madison added. “The suspect was taken into custody and a handgun was recovered.”
The driver, Carlos Lara Jr., 30, of Los Angeles, died outside a hardware store, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.
As of Monday, it was not immediately clear who the gunman was employed as a security guard or whether he was arrested or arrested.
The man's loved ones, who described Lara as a father and electrician, held a candlelight vigil on Sunday and condemned the shooting as insensitive, according to NBC Los Angeles.
“His family needs answers. They need closure,” Lara's friend Rubi Orozco told NBC Los Angeles. “If we could de-escalate the situation, he could have survived.”
