If you're planning on taking advantage of one of Samsung's many Galaxy S24 deals, or even if you're tempted by Google's surprise Pixel 8 sale, just wait. Galaxy S23 Ultra might be a better option.
When Samsung launched the Galaxy S24, it also promised that some of the phone's AI features would be narrowed down to devices launching in 2023. They include: It offers Live Translate, which provides real-time translation of calls, and Circle to Search, which lets users highlight and search for objects in photos by scribbling or circling them. Note Assist has also been improved to automatically format, summarize, translate, and correct spelling for your notes. Finally, the Galaxy S23 comes with AI-powered image creation and editing capabilities via Photo Assist.
These are some of Samsung's key Galaxy AI skills. Circle to Search is being touted as a next-gen feature by Google and Samsung, while generative image editing is an AI addition to the S23.
I'm sure Samsung plans to roll out more AI features as the S24 series develops, but for now the S23 (especially the S23 Ultra) is a great value phone. Now you have those next-gen AI features (with more to come), a great camera, 3 years of OS updates, 4 years of security patches, and most importantly, it's relatively cheap .
The S23 series is not currently available for purchase directly from Samsung, but the 256GB model of the S23 Ultra is priced at $895 on Amazon. Meanwhile, his unlocked S24 Ultra sells for $1319.99 on Amazon and $1299.99 on his website at Samsung. That's about a 47% price difference between two phones that aren't all that different.
Where this becomes even more complicated is with trade-in transactions. Samsung offers the highest amount of money for older phones compared to other retailers. Best Buy is offering $295 for your old iPhone 13 Pro Max (a realistic phone to trade in) when you buy the Galaxy S24 Ultra, while Samsung is offering $500 for the same device.
However, all Galaxy S23 models are out of stock on Samsung's website, so you won't be able to take advantage of Samsung's high trade-in value. So if you have a recent Apple phone, you might be able to get it at a good price and therefore get a much cheaper Galaxy S24.
The only drawback is software support. The remaining four years of security patches on the S23 are no match for his seven years of support on the S24, a recent policy announced by Samsung at the launch of its latest phones. It's possible that Samsung will revisit this policy and retroactively apply several more years of Android updates to older Galaxy smartphones, but you shouldn't count on that remote possibility when shopping for a new phone.

The addition of AI-powered generation capabilities to smartphones, along with industry-wide standards for longer software support periods, could change the way mobile phones are purchased in the near future. If both the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 continue to receive new AI features during their seven-year support period, as Google tends to do with feature removal programs, the appeal of new phones will evaporate.
It's not perfect, but hardware advancements in the battery and camera departments are always important. But knowing that your phone will not only be kept up-to-date, but also state-of-the-art will dull some of the luster of a recently released phone. This is why major generative AI companies like Google, Samsung, and Microsoft are considering paywalls for chatbots. In addition to the expense of developing and operating this technology, these companies need new and stable sources of revenue.
