PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — After receiving their city property tax bill in the mail, some people felt dizzy as they rushed to the post office. The reason for the rush was that the city was late in shipping the bill and needed to act very quickly to get the early bird rate.
Property tax bills are arriving late in mailboxes across Pittsburgh.
“I opened it thinking I had to pay, and it said February 10th, and I thought, 'It's Saturday,'” Beachview resident Kelly Herbster said.
Herbster hurried to the nearest post office and was surprised by the quick response to reduce the interest rate he was offered by the 10th. Then she called her city friends, who always end up throwing their emails to her side.
“So I said, 'Did you happen to look at your tax bill?' And they said, 'No, but we do.' I said, “Well, I think you're better.”
Thankfully, enough people started flooding the city's real estate office with questions. The city has acknowledged its mistake in sending out the invoice late and will extend the property tax discount period.
What's fair is fair, Herbster says.
“There are a lot of different ways to get a discount, so I think it depends on how much you charge. But for me it was almost $21, so I buy it there and put $21 in my pocket,” Herbster said. Ta.
The Pittsburgh City Council took a preliminary vote on the extension until Feb. 20, with a final vote expected Tuesday.
