February 11, 2024 – The new Krk Bridge has several new features planned and is currently expected to be built and operational by 2030.
As Poslovny Dnevnik writes, at the beginning of this year, the construction process of a new bridge on Krk Island was officially started. The upcoming Krk Bridge will be a very impressive construction, and once completed it will be able to stand proudly next to Peljesac Bridge and others.
HAC also published a graphical representation of the new Krk Bridge. This shows that the bridge will significantly increase traffic flow to the island, both in terms of tourism and supporting the local economy. This is a big selling point for the future Krk Bridge, as during the summer the traffic volume towards the island is very high, causing massive congestion and traffic jams.
The upcoming Krk Bridge will have both road and rail tracks to reach the new port terminal in Omishaly, which is also not yet built. The bridge itself will span 850 meters over the sea, but the transportation part of the project is not just a bridge, but also includes a viaduct spanning a valley approximately 900 meters long and a tunnel approximately 740 meters long. According to a report from Večernji.hr, meters.
The new Krk Bridge should be two storeys high. In other words, the upper “layer” becomes the road, and the railway line becomes the “floor” below the bridge. Including all associated access roads, viaducts and bridges, the total length of the project is more than 7 kilometers. The route of the new bridge will be further south than the current one, and the bridge will not cross the island of Sve. Although it is Marko, it is on the route from the eastern end of Cishneva Bay to the peninsula where Maltempo Fortress is located.
It is also interesting to note that the new Krk Bridge is properly equipped with windbreaks, allowing traffic even in strong winds, even when it is known that the current bridge must prohibit the passage of certain groups of vehicles. It means being safe.
Earlier this year, HAC launched the Krk Bridge project by announcing a tender for the study and preparation of traffic documents. The estimated cost of his design is a whopping 600,000 euros. HAC said it plans to complete an environmental impact study and other documents over the next three to four years, after which construction will take at least two years. It is estimated that the new Krk Bridge could be constructed and put into operation by 2030.
