MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Moon Township Christian School is the first to install a state-of-the-art security system designed by a local company.
“We always say we want to be prepared and not be paranoid,” said Dr. Claudia Bavaro, principal of Rhema Christian School. “That's what we're doing and we're being very proactive about it.” Channel 11 visited the private school on Friday as Martin Communications proceeded to install the system. . Panic buttons are located in various undisclosed locations throughout the school.
Staff members have access to a button that triggers automatic notification to local law enforcement.
This is technology that Pennsylvania public schools may soon be required to consider. Lawmakers are considering “Alyssa's Law,” named after the victim of the Parkland school shooting.
“Police calls are made within seconds, not minutes,” said Don Martin, president of the company. “They know exactly what level and room in the building the noise is coming from, so they have almost instantaneous information so they know exactly where to go.”
Bavaro said he is proud that his company is ahead of the curve when it comes to implementation.
“When we do tours and we have families interested in attending Rhema Christian School, one of the first questions they ask is, 'How safe is it here?' Honestly. You can say, “We always have the most up-to-date information.''
Next week, Martin will install the corresponding technology at the Moon Township Police Department. He believes the system will be fully operational by the middle of next week.
Martin told Channel 11 that he would like to gift the system to Rehma.
“We have a Pittsburgh mindset: Let's protect ourselves first. And we have hopes and prayers… We want to take this to every school across the country. This. is very important to us,” he said.
He is in talks with other districts and hopes to make the product affordable and available for less than $20,000.
The system also includes AI technology that is compatible with the building's camera system. He said the technology can detect threats through indoor and outdoor footage.
