milwaukee — A security guard at a Wisconsin hospital was stabbed by a patient early Monday morning.
Shortly after 6 a.m., Milwaukee police received a report of a man stabbing a Columbia St. Mary's Hospital employee, who was later determined to be a security guard, Fox 6 reported. The 46-year-old police officer was treated for damages. He – he sustained near-fatal injuries, but was subsequently released.
The officer was injured during an altercation with an 18-year-old suspect at the emergency department located at 2301 North Lake Drive. Police arrived at the scene “almost immediately” and took the suspect into custody, the hospital said in a statement. There were no other injuries.
Criminal charges are expected to be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.

Columbia St. Mary's Hospital was sued in 2020 by a woman who was stabbed more than a dozen times by a stranger in the hospital parking lot in 2018, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Her attacker knocked her down, stabbed her repeatedly in the head, chest, abdomen, and her arms, kicked her in the head and in her face, knocked out several of her teeth, and caused both of her lungs to collapse. The complaint alleges that the attack lasted 10 minutes and that no Columbia St. Mary's Hospital security personnel intervened. It also alleges that there was no security guard stationed at the hospital garage and no surveillance cameras were in operation.
The lawsuit also alleges that the hospital was aware of past incidents on campus and crimes in nearby areas, but failed to take appropriate safety measures.
In May 2019, the Journal Sentinel hired a building security consulting firm to evaluate eight parking lots at five Milwaukee-area hospitals, including Columbia St. Mary's Hospital. The company determined that two parking lots, including the one where a woman was stabbed in 2018, had unstable lighting and cast shadows. In some areas, lighting was 30 times lower than industry standards. A broken emergency call box was also found.
