MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) — Lawmakers are introducing legislation that would stiffen penalties for those who run from police and add safeguards to protect judges as threats against them have skyrocketed in recent years. Acknowledged.
One bill would require a prison sentence if a driver attempts to elude law enforcement and causes serious death or injury. Rep. Bob Donovan, R-Milwaukee, authored the proposal and said it has broad support from Milwaukee leaders as the city continues to combat reckless driving incidents.
“Our streets have never been more dangerous,” Donovan said. “Get your act together.”
Dauben said the proposal is in honor of Erin Mogensen, a Milwaukee woman who died after police say a driver fled from a Wauwatosa police officer and ran a red light, killing Mogensen and her unborn child. He said that it represents.
judicial protection
Lawmakers also approved a bipartisan bill that would further protect judges by adding an additional layer of security as threats against them increase.
One bill would protect some personal information from the public. Another measure creates new penalties for individuals who protest outside a judge's home “with the purpose of obstructing, obstructing, or obstructing the administration of justice.”
There were 142 threats against Wisconsin judges last year, according to the Wisconsin Supreme Court Sheriff's Office.
In 2022, Juneau County Circuit Court Judge John Romer was shot and killed in his home by a man he had sentenced to six years in prison in 2005.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said the proposals were brought forward at the request of state Superior Court judges.
“Of course we still have the right to a strong protest policy where people can express all kinds of opinions like that, but trying to make someone's personal information available for blackmail or to protest at home The idea is probably just as far off,'' Voss said.
