AI technology has advanced rapidly over the past few years and is now being implemented in smartphones. Samsung's new Galaxy S24 series now includes Galaxy AI, a suite of powerful AI-powered tools to make your life easier, including photo editing features.
AI photo editing may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the S24's AI photo editing tools are tastefully done and can really help you get closer to perfection. What's more, it's very easy to use. Here's how to get the most out of Galaxy S24's AI photo editing features, available on Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Note that Galaxy AI's photo editing tools are only available in Samsung's own Gallery app, not Google Photos. This also means that these tools only work with photos that are in the Gallery app, such as photos you've restored from your previous Galaxy phone or new photos you've just captured.
How to use editing suggestions on Galaxy S24
Sometimes you take a photo and think you've captured the perfect moment, only to find that something looks wrong or could be improved with a few tweaks. But what can you do to improve your images? You may be confused about what to do next, and editing suggestions can help.
Showing edit suggestions is a bit more difficult and not very obvious. Here's how to use editing suggestions on your Samsung Galaxy S24.
- open gallery Apps on Samsung Galaxy S24 devices.
- Open and select the photo you want to edit.
- choose detail icon (it's an “i” in a circle).
- Once Galaxy AI analyzes your photo, it will give you some suggestions to improve it. These are displayed above the photo's metadata.
- The results of the editing suggestions will vary depending on the photo. Several options are possible. remaster, erase the shadowor remove reflections.
- Select the desired edit suggestion and follow the onscreen instructions. You may need to tap or draw on objects in the photo or adjust the slider bar.
That's all! Edit suggestions are made locally on all his S24 model devices. That means no internet or data connection of any kind is required.
How to use generative editing on Galaxy S24
Another AI photo editing tool is Generative Edit. This allows you to move objects in your image or remove them entirely, and use generative AI to fill in the missing parts. You can also straighten or distort the image, and the generative AI can fill in any missing backgrounds. Here's how it works:
- open gallery Apps on Samsung Galaxy S24 devices.
- Open and select the photo you want to edit.
- choose edit Button (looks like a pencil).
- choose generative edit icon (blue circle with three stars).
- Use your finger to outline the object you want to remove. If you made a mistake, please select deselect Then start over.
- use touch and hold Click on the selected object and drag it to another area of the image.or please select remove Press (eraser icon) to erase the object. You can choose return (back arrow) to move the object back to its original position.
- If you need to straighten the image, please select Aadjust slider It's at the bottom.
- After making the desired adjustments, generate. Galaxy AI will then fill in any missing backgrounds and adjust any objects that have been moved.
- Select and hold See original text If you want to see how this new image compares to the original, click the button.
- select end after that save as copy. Images saved this way will have a Generative Edit watermark.
Unlike Edit Suggestions, Generative Edit uses the cloud, so you need an internet connection for Generative Edit to work. Edits also take longer to process, especially if you make a lot of edits, so don't be surprised if it takes a few seconds to see the final result.
Examples of what you can do with AI photo editing on Galaxy S24
I tried out the Galaxy AI photo editing tools on some of the photos I've taken so far. The results are pretty good in most cases. Here are some examples of the results you can expect from both edit suggestions and generative edits.
Take a look at this plate with a variety of nigiri ordered from a sushi restaurant. I wanted to focus on the nigiri, but due to the size of the table there were other dishes that were getting in the way of the photo and I couldn't remove them completely. I used generative editing to remove the empty plate on the left and the rice on the far right.
Galaxy AI did a decent job of cleaning up the image, but instead of filling it with a dark wooden surface like the rest of the table, it left behind some digital artifacts. Still, the purpose was to remove unnecessary elements from the image.
This is a photo my husband took while we were waiting for dinner. The waiter was in the background when he took the image, and despite the blur caused by portrait mode, it was a bit distracting. Generative He used Edit to remove him from the background and filled it with something that Galaxy AI couldn't decipher. You know there's something there, but you don't know what it is.
I saw a squirrel at the park the other day. I love taking pictures of those creatures. I picked up my S24 and zoomed in so I could shoot without disturbing it. However, there was a dark shadow coming from the tree next to it. In Galaxy AI, I used an edit suggestion to remove shadows, and it worked really well here. The shadows of the grass and tree trunks disappeared, and the squirrel's appearance became a little brighter. It's now easier to find squirrels.
This is a photo of a slightly different place in the city. It's a great little place to relax and enjoy the view. I liked the look of this little spot, so I took a photo. For Galaxy AI, I rotated it a little and filled it into the background. I generated a random tree trunk on the left and more bushes on the right. You can't really tell that the tree trunk is AI, other than noticing a little blurry spot in the bushes next to the trunk.
Finally, this is a great sunset photo I took while walking down the street. Other places are incredibly dark due to the light of the setting sun. With remastered editing suggestions, deep blacks and shadows are now brighter, allowing you to see distant sidewalks and cars.
A fun way to edit photos
In our tests with Galaxy AI's photo editing tools, we found that it produced pretty decent results.
Edit suggestions are useful if you want your photo to look a little better than it really is without doing any extra work. Great for fixing something before posting it to social media. Getting good results using generative editing tools requires a little more work.
Galaxy AI features, including these photo editing tools, are currently only available on Samsung's Galaxy S24 devices. This includes the base models S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra.
