WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – This is the second time in history that a presidential cabinet member has been impeached.
On Tuesday night, House Republicans impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by a vote of 214-213. Mayorkas has now been formally charged with felonies and misdemeanors over House Republicans' mishandling of the U.S. southern border.
This was the second vote in recent weeks on Mr. Mayorkas' fate. The first attempt failed by two votes.
On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) cast the deciding vote after being absent while undergoing cancer treatment. Three Republicans still voted against impeachment.
Mayorkas becomes the second cabinet member in history to be impeached. The last time he was in 1876.
“Alejandro Mayorkas deserves to be impeached, and Congress has a constitutional obligation to do so,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said in a statement.
“History will never look kindly on the unconstitutional and blatant act of partisanship in which House Republicans targeted honorable public servants for petty political maneuvering,” President Biden said. Told.
The articles of impeachment will now be sent to the U.S. Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, so impeachers are almost certain to be dead on arrival.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said, “House Republicans have failed to present any evidence that would amount to an impeachable offense. This is a new low for House Republicans.”
