[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 5, “Part 5.”]
true detective night land ' takes an insane twist in the final moments of episode 5, bringing viewers one step closer to solving the mystery behind Annie K.'s (Nivi Pedersen) murder and the death of the Tsalal scientist.
Detective Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) is approached by Connery (Christopher Eccleston) in pursuit of answers about the scientist and Annie K. after being caught on camera crossing the boundaries of Silver Sky Mines' territory. I was given a strong warning to stop. He also shared the official death report. Scientists claim that an avalanche took them away, but Danvers, especially after learning that Tsalal's research and mines are closely linked to pollution statistics and may have been leaked along the way. Not convinced.
Meanwhile, Kate McKitterick (Dervla Kirwan) of the Silver Sky Mining Company has an interesting conversation with Hank (John Hawkes), telling him that she needs him to remove Danvers from the path leading to the cave. She hires Otis Heiss (Klaus Tange) to prevent Danvers from being led to this cave, which could reveal the secret of Annie's death, that he has been paid well for his assistance in the past. Talk about the need to eliminate.
But while this episode seemed to imply that Annie was killed by Hank for the mining company, those red herrings were blown to smithereens when he showed up at the Danvers' house. . While working on the Wheeler case, Hank discovers that Danvers and Navarro (Kari Reis) have attempted a murder-suicide, so he kills Otis and gives the gun to his fellow detective, while also carrying out the same crime at Danvers' house. I promise to do this.
But then Danvers' son Pete (Finn Bennett), who heard gunshots while staying at Danvers' cabin, enters. Danvers asks Pete to think about what he's going to do, but Hank takes a moment to fill in some information first.
“I didn't kill Annie K. I just moved her body,” he says matter-of-factly. Hank says to his son: “Blood is blood, Peter. Remember that.” Just as the man was about to pull the trigger on Danvers, Pete shot his own father in the head.
This was shocking and horrifying, but ultimately the only action Danvers and Navarro could have taken to advance the case. Luckily, Otis said he told Liz that they had to go through the cave to find Annie's murder scene. But what does this mean regarding the murderer?
Given that Raymond Clark's (Owen McDonnell) phone was found in his RV, he remains the prime suspect, but the fact that Annie's death was also covered up by a landmine makes it clear who was involved in the murder. I can't help but wonder if there are others out there. What do you think now that Hank has been ruled out as a suspect? Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Stay tuned for his finale on Sunday, February 18th on HBO.
