(CNN) — In the final issue of British Vogue under Edward Enninful, the outgoing editor featured not one superstar, but 40 on the cover.
The Ghanaian-born fashion editor abruptly resigned in June after more than six years at the helm. His outro covers have featured supermodels, Hollywood megastars, and pop icons, as well as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Miley Cyrus, Linda Evangelista, Jane Fonda, Dua Lipa, Kate Moss, and Serena.・The darlings of the fashion world that he has worked with, such as Williams, are gathered here.
Enninful said the 40 women photographed in Manhattan by Steven Meisel (cover) and Ned Rogers (inside) flew in from London, Paris, Milan, Los Angeles and more to take part in this historic issue. I mentioned it in the last sentence. Editor's letter.
“For the final issue, I knew the cover would be dedicated to women. Of course! Women have shaped British Vogue for almost 108 years and have guided me throughout my life. Needless to say, you have certainly impacted every moment of my six-and-a-half year tenure here,” Enninful wrote.
“It was clear to everyone on the team that no woman could and should not summarize the past few years for this magazine,” he added. “What we needed was a collective effort to bring to life what I hope was a bold, disruptive, and evolutionary era in Vogue's history. .”
Last year, the news of Enninful's departure shocked the fashion world. After a career in which he influenced the upper echelons of the industry through his contributions to iD, W, and American Vogue, Mr. Enninful was the founder of the latter magazine, which many saw as a much-needed new direction for the storied publication. The British version championed diversity.
His tenure also included hiring Black photographers Misan Harriman and Kennedy Carter to shoot our cover story in 2020, and featuring disabled activists, models, and creators in our May 2023 issue. There were some historic firsts, including a five-part cover series.
Enninful also sidestepped the industry's ageist norms with a 2019 issue dedicated to women over 50 (with Fonda on the cover). His other cover stars included Miriam Margolyes, 82, who posed nude for last year's Pride Month issue, and Dame Judi Dench, then 85.
In Enninful's final issue, 55-year-old Christy Turlington, one of 40 people featured on the cover, acknowledged the change in acceptance, saying: “We're getting better at celebrating women of all ages.'' “It's becoming more and more,” he told the magazine.
Enninful was rumored to be taking the next top job at American Vogue in 2022, but at the time, Enninful told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that she “doesn't want the role of Anna Wintour.” '' said Anna Wintour has no plans to resign anytime soon. He will now take up an advisory role at Vogue publisher Condé Nast, which he previously said will give him “freedom to work on a wider range of creative projects”.
Meanwhile, Chioma Nnadi, former digital editor of American Vogue, will take the helm of British Vogue, becoming the first black woman appointed to the position. Enninful previously described Nnadi as “a brilliant and unique talent with real vision who will take this publication to new heights.”
Addressing his new role in his last editor's letter, Enninful, he said: “I will continue to champion the incredible diversity of voices in fashion and media, ensuring the explosion of energy of recent years continues. I am determined to go.”
“We say that all the time, because we always need to say it. There's still a lot of work to do,” he added.
