BAMBERG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – A truck carrying 26 pallets of donated pet food and supplies arrived in Bamberg last week as part of a national partnership between the Humane Society of the United States and Chewy.
Lucy Risch, executive director of the Mary Ann Morris Animal Shelter, and Bamburg County Animal Control applied for the grant last year.
Bamberg became the third recipient of the 2024 Chewy Truck in the state.

Chewy donates supplies and food, and the Humane Society pays for shipping and coordinates delivery.
In this example, Bamberg County leaders partnered with the Bamberg County Agency on Aging to distribute products to elderly pet owners.
Animal Control Officer Ginny Mitchell, Risch, Bamberg Waste Control Officer Farrell Pulaski and City of Bamberg Animal Control Officer Jonathan Edgmon were all on site to greet the Chewy truck and pick up pet supplies.
The Humane Society's partnership with Chewy was designed to help keep pets in the home. It was launched during the pandemic to help families struggling to feed their pets, especially in marginalized communities.
Due to the pandemic, many pet owners were faced with having to surrender their pets due to lack of resources.
Kay Clary, Executive Director of the Bamberg Agency on Aging, is pleased that Bamberg has been selected to receive the donation.
“This is a great opportunity for many people in Bamberg County,” Clary said. “We serve many pet owners and have volunteers who feed many animals during the week. Inflation has made it very difficult to feed these pets. Donations to the Humane Society and Chewy are sorely needed and appreciated, and we are so excited to get this started.”
County Council President Evert Comer Jr. said Bamberg County “expresses our deepest gratitude” for the donation.
Details regarding product distribution will be announced at a later date, officials said.
