The Bahamas is one of the most popular travel destinations, especially for Americans. Its white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters attract millions of tourists each year. However, the Bahamian Islands are currently facing heightened safety concerns following recent warnings of increased violence.
On January 26, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for the country, urging Americans to use caution when traveling to the region.
What prompted the travel advisory?
The U.S. Embassy in Nassau issued a statement advising U.S. citizens to be aware of the increase in crime in the Bahamas. Since the beginning of 2024, he has had 18 murders in Nassau. These murders occur at all hours of the day, including on the streets in broad daylight.
The State Department says most of these problems are due to gang violence and occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. The country also faces problems such as violent crime, robbery, armed robbery, and sexual assault.
When issuing travel advisories, the State Department uses a scale of 1 to 4 to indicate the severity of the situation. The Bahamas is currently under a Level 2 advisory, which means “be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.” In most cases, visitors to Level 2 areas do not need to be extremely concerned about safety, but caution is always recommended.
On the other hand, if a country is under a Level 3 advisory, U.S. citizens are asked to avoid the area. Countries with a Level 4 travel advisory have a strict “no travel” policy in place. Countries currently under a Level 4 travel advisory include Russia and Ukraine.
In addition to the Bahamas, other tropical destinations such as the Turks and Caicos Islands and Cuba are also under Level 2 travel advisories due to increased crime. Mexico has a wide range of travel advisories in place, ranging from Level 2 to Level 3. Jamaica was recently moved to Level 3 due to problems with crime and health services.
How to stay safe when traveling to the Bahamas
A statement released by the U.S. Embassy includes information on how to stay safe when traveling to the Bahamas. The embassy is urging travelers to use extreme caution when traveling to the eastern part of New Providence Island, where the capital, Nassau, is located. Much of the gang violence occurs in the “Over the Hill” area, just south of Shirley Street. Travelers are advised to avoid this area if possible.
Other suggestions include being extra careful when walking and driving at night, keeping a low profile, and ultimately being aware of your surroundings. It is also important to review your personal security plan and not physically resist robbery attempts.
