(WHTM) – Next time you book a flight, hotel or resort, see what they do. They are likely to try to upsell you to spend more money.
Revenge trips over the past two years have been expensive… “Too expensive,” one traveler said. It's not just about flying.
Also, your next trip could be even more expensive as airlines and travel companies try to make you pay more for extras.
Barron's Weekly says, “Airlines are getting creative with upselling…” Because it brings in money.
For example, if you try to book a basic economy ticket, you'll be asked if you want to upgrade to main cabin.
The airline will inform you that you will not be able to select your seat in advance or board early.
For hotels, the website will ask for better rooms.
And on cruises, they might try to upsell you not just the VIP section of the ship, but all sorts of extra trips and adventures.
However, because of those smelly files, upselling can cost you a lot of money if you're not careful.
Moving from basic economy to main cabin? It could be an extra hundred dollars. Plus, adding excursions can turn a $500 budget cruise into a $1,000 cruise.
And the worst part is they will shame you into sticking with the cheapest package.
There's nothing wrong with upselling to a higher level if that's what you want. However, be careful not to waste your money.
