According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters across the country each year. Of these, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and approximately 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic features several pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Robert Jones: Ready to Shine
Introducing Robert Jones, a 4-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix who was brought to the Arizona Humane Society as a stray by a field team in November. Upon initial examination, veterinarians at AHS Trauma Hospital noted that Robert Jones appeared to have sustained injuries that could have been caused by being hit by a car.
It was clear that this sweet boy was in pain every time AHS staff had to attend to him, but he remained calm and polite the entire time. Subsequent x-rays revealed that Robert Jones had broken his right hind leg, which would require some time to heal before he could be put up for adoption. During his recovery, he also endured bouts of kennel cough and fought them off like a champ.
As his leg healed and his nasal congestion cleared, Robert Jones's cheerful personality began to shine through. He loves running around outside and meeting new friends, especially when his friends give him as much cuddles as he does.
Recruitment method: Interested recruits can meet the brilliant Robert Jones at AHS' South Mountain location. The $49 adoption fee includes all adult dogs one year of age and older, plus spay/neuter, current vaccinations, microchip, and follow-up health exam at VCA Veterinary Hospital. Maisie: A gentle cat who can walk like a dog
Maisie is a special 10 year old female. Her owner moved out and left her alone outside. Her neighbors started feeding her because she was so thin. Her kind neighbor brought her to us because her Maisie was being attacked by other cats in the area.
Maisie is gentle and sweet and loves attention. She gets along well with the other cats in the suite. She has had a difficult life which makes her look older than she really is, but in this case her appearance is deceiving. I couldn't ask for a more gentle cat.
One of the most exciting things about Maisie is that she is trained to walk on a leash.
Recruitment method: Visit us at 10807 N 96th Ave., Peoria or call 623-773-2246. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other adoption locations are the Youngtown location, 11129 W Michigan Ave., Suite 1; The time and day of the week are the same. , as well as Surprise Petsmart, located at 13764 Bell Road.

Griffin: In search of a forever home
Griffin is a handsome 5-year-old German Shepherd mix who came to the Arizona Humane Society in October after being seized by police from his previous owner due to abandonment. Although Griffin had no notable physical injuries in his life outside of AHS, it was clear that he had not been given the love he deserved in the past.
He was adopted a few weeks after his arrival, but returned to the shelter a few weeks later, and his two previous owners eventually gave him up. It's not that Griffin isn't a friendly boy. Because griffins love to meet new people and greet them with excitement.
To learn how to be a proper gentleman in a home environment, Griffin will benefit from some training that will also help him bond with his future forever family. Lots of walks and relaxing time outside are perfect for Griffins. Griffins want to get to know other dogs in your life, but want a cat-free home.
Recruitment method: Interested owners can meet the gorgeous griffin at AHS' South Mountain location. The $49 adoption fee includes all adult dogs one year of age and older, plus spay/neuter, current vaccinations, microchip, and follow-up health exam at VCA Veterinary Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt.

Peanuts: Fluffy, fun, and cuddly
Peanut is a 2 1/2 to 3 year old Shepherd blend and weighs approximately 62 pounds. Peanut doesn't like other dogs getting too close to him, so he does his best as your only canine companion. Her breed typically sheds, so have a brush handy. She is a beautiful person looking for her forever home.
