They've caught my attention before and now they've done it again. Boston-based babe BEDTIMEMAGIC is back with perhaps their best drop yet this year. sleep together. The adorable album features his art that perfectly matches the pug's body that perfectly matches the duo's Don on stage, and six new tracks featuring his charming girlfriend.
I sat down with the friendly and entertaining frontmen to discuss their latest work.
For those who don't know, BEDTIMEMAGIC is Nicholas Pentavola (vocals and strings) and Morgan Burns (vocals and drums) from Boston, Massachusetts. They recorded this latest drop at the Bridge Soundstage in Cambridge. Available digitally or on vinyl from our Bandcamp page.
In Boston, BEDTIMEMAGIC is a local staple, and their Boston Music Award nominations prove it. But they're no boring townspeople, with tour dates scheduled to include stops in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota.
Even in music, when you listen to BEDTIMEMAGIC, you can't miss the requisite amount of shocking and jarring riffs. Live, the duo crows louder than most. Their set captivated onlookers who at first wondered at the strangely dressed duo… “What the hell is that all about?” This quickly changes as the set begins, with Pentabola shouting his emotions in a towering, powerful voice, and Barnes' big drums.
song title sleep together Follow the theme with track names like “Overslept,” “Turn Down Service,” and “PaJamaS.” A witty and skillful writing style is evident in it.
Pentavola has stated that the writing of this album was primarily focused on loss. Both himself and Burns offer songs that “reflect his significant life experiences that sadly ultimately came to an end.” Growing pains that many people can relate to.
When asked about the jacket photo, sleep together, Pentabola tells me that Montreal artist Sean Arsenian is behind it. The cover depicts two dogs (which serve as a portrait of the band), seemingly possessed by their own thoughts.
Pentavora also references the album itself, which depicts two dogs continuously urinating on a spinning vinyl record. Adorable. Jen Taylor, a popular artist from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, graciously accepted to create this piece.
This time I was lucky enough to see BEDTIMEMAGIC live at my beloved O'Brien's in Boston on consecutive nights and again in Manchester the following night. Both were Seattle's almighty Great Falls.
If you want to catch BEDTIMEMAGIC, they have upcoming shows scheduled, including a stop at Minneapolis noise fest Caterwaul later this year.
Follow the band on The Gram for updates on additional shows and releases. See you in the pit.
