Section VII's annual sectional finals were once again held at North Bowl Lanes to determine the boys and girls high school bowlers who will represent their sections in the New York State Tournament.
On the boys side was Peru High School. Fresh off their second consecutive undefeated season, the Nighthawks showed no signs of slowing down in their quest for a section championship.
“It feels good,” said Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys bowling MVP Keegan Hemingway. “We were just working together. We were trying to keep our heads up, get all the spares we could, increase our pin count and just ride it out.”
On the girls side, it was a close game between Saranac High School and Beekmantown High School. The underdog Spartans led in the first four games, but the Eagles continued their strong run in the fifth game and regained the lead. But it was in the sixth game when Saranac's Lacey LaPointe's last spare gave her team a pin, and they needed to escape with a narrow one-point victory.
“We went into this game knowing we had to be clutch,” Lapointe said. “When I hit the spare, no one reacted, but when I asked the coach if I hit it, he said yes. We all screamed. It felt so good.”
All members of the Peru boys and Saranac girls teams will travel to each state with a composite team made up of the top individual scorers from non-winning schools.
The state tournament begins on Friday, March 8th at AMF Strike and Spare Lanes in Syracuse, New York.
