Pikesville, Maryland – Maryland State Police is reminding residents to use caution and verify credentials when using the services of auto dismantlers and recyclers (ADRs) and scrap processors in Maryland.
More generally, automotive dismantlers and recyclers (ADRs) and scrap processor services encourage the public to purchase and/or sell automotive supplies, from used cars, RVs/campers, and trailers to scrap metal. Post targeted signs and advertisements.
According to Maryland law, individuals are prohibited from engaging in the business of dismantling and recycling (or scrapping) motor vehicles without proper permits. This includes the acquisition or removal of vehicles for the purpose of disassembly or salvage. Advertisements for the purchase, towing, or removal of junk or abandoned vehicles by licensees must prominently display the license number. Criminals may face:
For a first offense, imprisonment for up to six months or a fine of up to $1,000.
Subsequent violations may result in imprisonment of up to one year and/or a fine of up to $2,000.
Automobile dismantler and recycler (ADR) and scrap processor licenses cover all or part of a vehicle. Other nonferrous (nonferrous-based) materials require a scrap metal license, which can be issued at each county circuit court clerk's office.
Maryland State Police urges residents to check the service's credentials and ensure it is licensed through the Maryland Department of Transportation before proceeding with a purchase or sale.
Individuals interested in obtaining an Automotive Dismantler and Recycler (ADR) and Scrap Processor license can apply on the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)/MVA website at https://bit.ly/42MnkGv can.
