TL;DR
- Samsung has revealed the list of phones that will come with the Galaxy S24 instant slow motion feature.
- This feature is expected to arrive on the Galaxy S23 and later, the Galaxy Tab S9 series, and foldable devices in 2023.
- Representatives cited system requirements as a reason why Instant Slow-Mo isn't coming to more phones.
One of the most interesting features of Samsung's Galaxy S24 phone is instant slow motion. This allows you to tap and hold a particular video clip to seamlessly play it in interpolated slow motion.
This time, Samsung made the announcement at a Korean community forum (h/t: Tarun Vats on X) The instant slow motion feature will also be coming to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series.
The moderator explained that Samsung uses both the NPU and GPU to power Instant Slow-Mo, and the feature requires 16.6ms of processing time for smooth real-time video playback. This excluded older phones such as the Galaxy S22 series.
No release schedule has been announced yet, but moderators said Samsung will notify users when this feature will be available on their devices. It is speculated that this will be coming to supported devices as part of the One UI 6.1 update, and will also be coming to older phones next month.
The ability to seamlessly view slow-motion versions of local videos is extremely useful, so we're glad to see instant slow-motion coming to other Galaxy devices. Samsung will allow users to generate separate slow-motion clips from local video, reducing the need to shoot in native slow-motion mode. Having said that, it's no surprise that the native slow-motion mode provides smoother video playback.
