House Republicans voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The successful vote on Tuesday, Feb. 13, follows an unsuccessful attempt by several Republican lawmakers to oppose the bill last week.
Republicans blame Mayorkas for the ongoing crisis at the U.S. southern border.
2nd District Councilman Rudy Yakim released the following statement after voting in favor of impeaching Mayorkas.
“For three years, Secretary Mayorkas has refused to comply with and enforce immigration laws passed by Congress. It chose the political priorities of the left.
“This dereliction of duty has led to an unprecedented security and humanitarian disaster along our southern border. All states, including Indiana, became border states under Secretary Mayorkas' term. Sheriffs from two districts have told me time and again about how fentanyl is flowing from our southern border and the havoc these deadly drugs are wreaking on our communities. He gave it to me.
“We cannot allow the chaos at the border and the downstream effects of this administration's open border policies to continue unabated. Today's vote is to ensure accountability and restore law and order to our southern border to end this crisis. This is an important step toward ending the crisis and protecting American sovereignty.”
3rd District Congressman Jim Banks also voted in favor of the impeachment resolution, stating:
“Tonight's vote is an important step in holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable for willfully ignoring the law and allowing more than 9 million illegal immigrants to cross our nation's southern border. Our Work is not over yet. It will take the largest deportation operation in history to undo the damage done by Secretary Mayorkas and the last American administration of Biden.”
Democrats have called the impeachment effort a political ploy.
