ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – The Rockingham County School Board meeting was packed with students and parents Monday night.
The board approved a school safety and security coordinator. The coordinator will work with school resource officers and administrators to further enhance safety.
They also heard updates on drug prevention and education programs in Rockingham County Public Schools (RCPS).
This update adds grade-level appropriate drug prevention lessons for elementary school students taught by physical education teachers.
The Commonwealth and Virginia Departments of Education (VDOE) enforce regulations regarding drug prevention courses in Virginia schools.
“Our goal is to educate students about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse in a developmentally appropriate way. There are 48 Health SOL standards for drug use and abuse in grades 6 through 10,” says the Health Department. said Athletic Coordinator Sheldon Rice. RCPS said.
The plan includes a program called “One Pill Can Kill,” advocated by Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares. This gives educators the tools to teach about opioids and other substances.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin passed Executive Order 28 to allow school districts to provide information about drug use and prevention to students, parents, and educators.
