A few weeks ago, a Windows enthusiast X's @PhantomOfEarth (formerly Twitter) We discovered some code in new versions of Windows 11's Snipping Tool and Notepad apps. Both indicate new features for the app are coming soon.
Today, the official Windows Insider blog announced that both Snipping Tool and Notepad have new versions for users in the Canary and Dev Insider channels. As predicted in the leak, the Snipping Tool update adds shape support for image capture. The Notepad update includes the Copilot generation AI tool.

Snipping Tool (version 11.2401.32.0)
This update adds the ability to add shapes to your Snipping Tool captures, allowing you to quickly add rectangles, ellipses, lines, and arrows to mark up your screenshots.

First, select the New Shape button on the toolbar and select the shape you want (you can change the fill and outline colors if you wish). Click and drag anywhere on the image to draw a new shape. You can resize, move, or change the color of the shape before clicking away. When you deselect a shape, it is merged with the image, but you can still use the eraser tool to delete the shape or undo the annotation.

Notepad (version 11.2401.25.0)
This update to Notepad adds new features to help you quickly understand the contents of text files. Explain with Copilot allows you to ask Copilot on Windows to explain a log file, code segment, or selected content directly from within Notepad.
The Notepad app opens with a new “Explain with Copilot” action for the selected content.
To try it out, highlight the text, right-click, and choose Explain with Copilot from the menu or use the new option. Ctrl+E When you use a keyboard shortcut, Copilot provides detailed instructions. This feature is available on devices with Copilot on Windows, but there is a known issue that may prevent some users from seeing this new feature in Notepad right away.
